I put a deposit down on a CPO 2013 Infiniti G37xS coupe at the idiotic
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
dealer in Chicago. But, that’s a story for another post.
This
post is about how maybe I’ll replace my current blacked out BMW coupe with another blacked out BMW coupe even though I shouldn’t. Help me!
The G37xS I have a deposit on is really the car I
should
get. It’s a little bit more than my $25k budget but it is still definitely within my means to afford it, especially since I’m selling my Jeep. It’s got 28k miles, brand new Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 tires, new brake pads, new engine and cabin air filters, a fresh oil change, wiper blades, and an alignment. It has an Infiniti CPO warranty. It hopefully won’t break like BMWs tend to break. The sales guy sent me this invoice:
But because I can’t commit to making simple easy vehicular purchasing decisions, I kept looking for other cars while I was looking for G37xSes, and I happened upon a 2011 BMW 335i xDrive coupe with 40k miles on it. It’s at a luxury/exotic used car dealer that includes a 3 year aftermarket powertrain warranty on all their cars. Their asking price before any haggling is $3k less than the agreed-upon price for the G37xS I have a deposit on.
It has heated sport seats, blacked out window trim, a new clutch, brake pads, and a full detail job. Someone put in a different shift knob and shaved the 335i badge. It has red seats. Red seats are cool .
Also, this car is a stick shift. You can’t get a stick shift awd G37. So the BMW gets me the same motor as my 135is in a slightly lower state of tune, a manual, red leather, and better visibility than the Infiniti, except everything will look dark through those damn tinted windows.
On the downside, all awd E92 3-series come with the standard suspension, and regular brakes, and an open rear differential. The G37xS has the sport suspension, big brakes, and rear LSD. The E92 has shambolic cup holders that pop out of the passenger-side dash above the glove box, and are better at breaking than they are at holding drinks.
It has the fucking awful Bridgestone RE050A RFT run-flat tires that I hate so much on my 135is. It will make me look like a douchebag, but that ship has sailed because my 135is already makes me look like a douchebag and so will a G37xS. Apparently I like douchey cars.
My plan was to just go to the Infiniti dealer in the Chicago burbs on Saturday, hammer out a deal to trade in my 135is, stop by my grandma’s nursing home for a quick visit, and head home. But now I’ve got to go check out this damn 335i xDrive, and then go to the Infiniti dealer in a different suburb an hour away from this place that has the BMW, then make up my mind on which car I want, and also that comes down to who gives me the best trade offer, then maybe go back to the place with the BMW, or not, and then visit grandma.
And oh by the way I leave on my vacation to Puerto Rico next Wednesday and there’s no earthly reason I should be fucking around with buying a car the Saturday before that, but I want to get this deal done before the next lease payment on my 135is goes through, which isn’t til 4/29, but I get home from vacation 4/26, and all the cars I’d trade it for are in Chicago so I have to knock this purchase out this Saturday. At least I’m already pre-approved on my loan so I don’t have to worry about fucking around with that noise at the dealership.
Fun times!

I would have said the G37 is a much better car to own than a 335i, but then you had to throw the manual in there.....

The 7-speed auto in the G37 is a pretty good transmission. It’s not as good as the 7-speed DCT in my 135is but much much much better than say, the old BMW 6-speed Steptronic auto.

Stop it. STOP. IT. The Infiniti has a warranty and will be far more interesting to write about ... here. You can put this thing to rest. Do it. It’s a great chassis.

Buy the E92. You won't regret it. I just got one in nearly the exact same spec.

As one of the few oppo infiniti G car owners, you must go for the G37!
Japanese reliability is worth it alone. Also, the maintenance just performed on the G37 means you’re good to go for quite a long time.
Also, have you actually driven the G37 yet? Or, an example like the one you’ve put the deposit on?

I use cup holders for two reasons:
1. To hold my douchey water bottle of C4 Pre-Workout on my way to the gym.
(This is the douchey container the powder comes in, I mix it up with water.)
2. On road trips it’s nice to have something to drink.
The G37 has two perfectly functional cup holders under a door in the center console in front of the armrest, and a couple more molded into the door pockets.
The E92 has that nonsense in the picture above.

I’ve driven a couple G37 coupes, just not an xS. But I have driven a G37x without the sport package and a stick shift G37 IPL. So not quite exactly like the one I put a deposit on but enough information from which to extrapolate.

Neither of my cars has cupholders and I don’t everuse them in cars that do, so forgive me if I ask what exactly is wrong with the BMW solution. Are they just too brittle?

They’re too small to hold much of anything beyond a can of soda, they’re way over on the passenger side so they’re hard to reach, and they tend to break often. I’m pretty sure my gym water bottle would break them.

Take your wallet out of your pocket.
Douse in lighter fluid.
And light it on fire.
That’s what it’ll feel like to get the BMW over the CPO’d and therefore nicely warrantied Infiniti.

Well hey, the BMW is at least $3k cheaper so I figure it has to break a couple times in some way not covered by the powertrain warranty included with it before it catches up to the Infiniti.

Mercedes combines red leather and silver paint to fool you. They are not reliable. They are rarely good cars, unless they have an AMG badge.

Those cup holders alone are enough for me to root for the Infiniti, despite the skrubs selling it being skrubs

My 135is has been mostly ok. It’s seen the shop a few times for quirky interior electronics things, and squeaks and rattles, and a busted windshield washer nozzle. None of which would be covered by this powertrain warranty the dealer is putting on the 335iX. I’m leaning towards just heading right to Infiniti at this point and not messing with two dealer visits an hour away from each other.

At this point I’ve got nuthin’ ... Lots of dealerships on the west side of Manhattan, so I could get anything I wanted. You have to decide what works for you. Proximity is important ....

An e92 335i will drive far better than an Infiniti, also this doesn’t have the same engine as your 135is. This has the N55 inline six single turbo. You lose twin turbos, but the N55 is supposedly much more reliable than the N54, anyways my 2009 335i has been great so far and I love driving it very much every day in all weather. Great do it all car.
I almost got a G37 instead, then I drove one back to back with a sport package 335i. Completely blows it out the water, I have no interest in the G’s anymore. That shift knob is the BMW performance knob SSK, nice shifter. Ask away, I did all my homework before I bought my 335i.

Oh and for what it's worth, the 335i isn't a very unreliable car, it's when you tune the shit out of it and put down 450whp without the supporting mods (which is what literally every other forum member on E90post does) that causes the car to be unreliable. Keep it stock or stage 1+ and you'll see many trouble free miles if you take care of mainentance.

A coworker had those in her BMW that we would sometimes take to go to lunch. They are pretty floppy for something that is supposed to be containing liquids.
